Honestly, I never thought that I'd be spending this kind of money on exercise equipment.
Why should I?... running is free... and I already had several bikes.

The truth, however, is that somewhere along the line... I got older. (not "OLD", just older)
After one surgery, my knee can't take the abuse of daily running and cycling on the roads around my city is death-defying.

I was familiar with Precor elliptical machines from the gym in my office (prior to retirement) and I have used them intermittently (usually after a running injury or when my back was acting up). Still, I researched all the usual resources... CR, Internet and Amazon. Because of the cost, Precor wasn't my 1st choice, but after more and more research I finally decided on the 5.31. Given that there was only one (fairly harsh) review on Amazon... I took the plunge anyway; trusting, instead, my past experience with Precor ellipticals and the predominance of the positive reviews elsewhere.

Although I've only had the machine for a week... these are my impressions...

Ordering...
Piece of cake - Ordering through Amazon was definitely the right move. Already discounted, I also received free shipping and no sales tax (a savings of over $400).

Delivery...
No worries - Amazon kept me informed of changes to the estimated delivery date and their "Customer Service" was so professional (and unexpected) that I had to write complimenting them. Communication fell down, slightly, once the local delivery company had the ball... but after several phone calls the machine delivered on the day estimated and in good condition. (Note: this thing is HEAVY) having an extra pair of hands around is almost a requirement. Fortunately, the room I planned to use the machine had an entrance to the outside, so it could be delivered directly where it was needed.

Assembly...
Straight forward - The instructions were adequate, although not entirely comprehensive. There were a couple steps that left me scratching my head a little but not too much. Note: this could have come as a result of my inclination to look at pictures and not "read" instructions. Again, having an assistant is helpful.

Usage...
Smooth - As I type this I'm contemplating my next workout. After a week, I've tried most of the programs; the operation is exactly as I anticipated. I am impressed with how smooth the motion is... how quiet the strides are... and how excellent the workout is. I purchased a Polar (chest-strap) heart rate monitor which paired without issue to the machine. Unfortunately, the heart rate monitor reads somewhat erratically. I think, however, this is more the issue with the monitor than the elliptical. Finally, the small workout display makes messages difficult to read. This is especially so because they are displayed for such a brief period of time. I don't tend to stare at the screen during my workout so there are times that, when glancing down at the screen, I notice that I just missed a message. I'm then left wondering what I missed.

Summary...
Pros
- Painless ordering and delivery process (ordering through Amazon saves $$$). Look for discounts, for bigger savings.
- Assembly was easy, especially with an assistant.
- Operation is great... smooth, quiet, sturdy.

Cons
- Heart rate reading can be erratic. (Although this might be the fault of the Polar HR monitor rather than the elliptical)
- Throughout your workout, the display can be cryptic and messages display too briefly. The workout summary is similarly difficult to read/understand.

I am a former jogger of 25 year and don't have real bad knees but have shifted to elliptical training at home for about 6 years now to minimize the potential for future knee surgery. I purchased a Nordic Track Audio Strider 990 Pro and really liked the resistance level and up to 40 degree ramp it offered. After three weeks a noise started in the rear drive and I returned it and decided to search for a higher end commercial grade elliptical. Everything pointed to a Precor and I still wanted the adjustable cross ramp which the Precor EFX 576i Experience offers. So I went with a refurbished model from a supplier on Amazon. The machine is constructed leaps and bounds better than any elliptical I have seen in a store. It is even more solid than the Nordic Track and the biggest footprint of the 576i is in the front of the machine giving it more stability. It does not plug into the wall and the motion of the machine generates power to run the monitor and the cross ramp. To do this there is a copper coil motor in the rear drive to generate the power which is attached to the belts. The motor does make a fairly quiet whirring noise that is normal for this machine. I recall this from using this machine in a gym years ago. So if you expect a machine that makes no noise you would be dissapointed. Probably better to go with another Precor designed for home usage that plugs in for power. Another factor since it is a gym machine is the screen is very large and high. This is not a problem for me as I am 6 feet tall. Had to angle the machine a little for my wife so she could watch television while exercizing. If you get one and plan to move it yourself they come fully assembled as refurbished. I got a furniture dolly and put it near the middle of the machine and it was easy to move into our house with three people up a couple of steps with plywood from the shipping crate as a ramp. It weighs about 330 pounds. Feel like this machine will last a long time.

First, some quick background to give some context on my comments here. I have been a very heavy user of a stepper for a few years. I essentially wore mine out and am a big fan of steppers; but in looking for a new one, the market now is small and the prices for quality steppers have gotten a bit ridiculous compared to other cardio machines. Additionally, I've been a bit worried about my knees over the long haul, so I started looking at alternatives. I ended up purchasing the Yowza Captiva from the company's website. I went with this one in large part because of the adjustable motion on the Captiva, but viewed it as a bit of a risk because of a lack of objective reviews (but what was available online was favorable).

After about a month of near-daily use, here are my impressions:

Delivery and setup: Delivered within specified window by friendly professional people. Box was in good condition. Inside the box, some shifting of contents had occurred, but nothing major and everything in good condition. The manual for setup was better than most, parts were well-marked/organized, and setup was uneventful with only a few minor bouts of confusion.

General impressions: I am very very pleased with the workout I receive with this machine. The longest end of the adjustable stride is where I spend the vast majority of my workouts and the motion is like a very smooth cross between running and a stepper motion, which is ideal for me. The range of resistance levels is quite large and I have no concerns that I will outgrow the machine on that front. I don't have a lot of prior experience with elliptical machines, but the shorter end of the variable motion stride spectrum (which is supposed to be more of a standard elliptical motion) seems very short and people looking primarily for a standard elliptical may be disappointed, though again my prior elliptical experience is very limited. The somewhat unusual upper-body motion is surprisingly not awkward and I find it useful. I tend to use both the motion handles and stationary handles, depending on the day, and will experiment more with different grips, etc - but I generally like the upper-body motion.

Console: Some of the reviews/pictures/advertizing materials show a multicolor display. That has been replaced with a monochrome (blue) display with the same layout shown in the pictures. This does not bother me at all - just pointing it out for people that might be important to. The console is well laid out for use while in a particular workout; but it is NOT intuitive for switching between workouts and the manual is essentially required to find the workout that you want to do. I generally stay on the manual settings. The workouts laid out in the manual are bewildering. The iPod dock appears to be just that - while described in many reviews as an "MP3/iPod dock" it appears to be only for iPods, does not come with any adapters for different types of iPods, and does not seem to have a "line-in" for non-Apple MP3's. Admittedly, I have not played with this, so there may yet be a way to make it work with other MP3's.

Usage: The manual, while pretty good for setup is exceedingly poor for general use. The various workout program descriptions are just okay, but there is essentially zero info on what should be obvious FAQ, or on the iPod dock or the heart rate monitor use. I tried to use the chest strap heartrate monitor that it comes with, but the machine does not seem to pick up its signal at all and there are no instructions whatsoever for pairing it with the machine (if that's necessary). Maybe the battery it came with is dead - I haven't tried replacing it. I was just trying it to explore the functions & don't care much about that so it isn't a big deal to me. Also, the website also does not cover the obvious FAQ or other items mentioned at all, so that can't be used to supplement the manual like one would typically hope.

Concerns: While I love the workout I get (very smooth, challenging, great motion, quiet), the machine does intermittently make some noises that make me wonder if I should be concerned about how well it will hold up over time. To be clear, the noises are temporary and minor clicking/clanking noises that only surface occasionally and don't affect the motion or workout. The great warranty, with in-home service and parts for 2 years (later, parts covered for a full 5 years, frame forever) makes me not worry too much about this, but thought I should point it out.

Summary: I really love the workout I get with the Yowza Captiva and its challenging but smooth variable motion, nice integrated fan, and resistance levels that I will never outgrow. Ultimately, this is the most important factor for me, so I'm happy with the purchase. More and better info in the manual or on the website would have been greatly appreciated, but aren't that big of a deal. Time will tell how well it holds up....

Impressed at how fast it was at my door too! The machine did have for me 2 hours of assembly, some of the steps were put together already so that helped. I find the resistance to be a decent workout, especially for beginners. It is a bit wobbly but I'm NOT afraid of it breaking because of that. Because the machine has a bike seat as well it prefect to continue moving while resting a bit.

I'm 6'4" 265lbs. Wanting the very best elliptical I narrowed my search to Precor and the Life Fitness X7 & Club models. Testing the Precor models I found the incline ramp, even at it's lowest settting, put a little too much stress on my knees, not too bad but worried what years of working out like that would do to me in the end. So then it came down to the X7/Advanced or the Club model. I was worried the Club's fixed 18" stride might be to short for me so I was interested in the X7 which adjusts from 18" to 24". I found on the X7 anything over 18" I started to lean forward in a hunched over position, longer the stride the worse it got so the X7 was definitely out. The Club model was a perfect fit for me so I bought it and I'm very happy with it. I did get it at a local store. The X7 had the advantage of a little better console I thought being an lcd as opposed to the Club's led readout. The X7 was also completely silent while the Club had just a little bit of a whine noise while in use but nothing too loud you'd notice once the radio or tv is on.
